In the 12th century, the counts of Provence found the town of Brignoles to be a magnificent summer residence. Their palace, with a tower, thick castle walls and machicolations, is now a much-visited museum. So many historical relics still exist in Brignoles, which is a scenic 45 km from Aix en Provence and just a few km from La Celle and Camps la Source. You can visit the old town of Brignoles from one of two circuits, but both will lead you through old stones, squares and authentic Provencal personality. The newer end of Brignoles boasts lively shopping and a lovely Saturday morning market. Be sure to visit the surrounding area of the city: vineyards, La Celle Abbey, House of the Bees and 11th and 12th-century chapels.
